Featured Story: Bibi Noorzia Ghafoory – A Timeless Role Model of Resilience and Cultural Pride
At the heart of the Afghan American Mothers and Strong Women Circle Initiative stands Bibi Noorzia Ghafoory, RahimaJaan’s mother, a radiant and resilient woman from Badakhshan, whose life embodies the strength and beauty of Afghan women in the diaspora. Raised amidst the nurturing landscapes of Badakhshan’s mountains, she grew up in harmony with nature, cultivating a confident, poetic spirit that continues to shine in her 90s. Her disciplined lifestyle; centered on nutrition, home remedies, and daily connections with her cherished circle of friends; reflects her enduring vitality. She tends to her garden, cultivating vibrant flowers, and delights her family with the finest Palau, a testament to her culinary artistry. Each day, she prepares a comforting tea blend of saffron, chamomile, cardamom, rose petals, and black seeds, each ingredient chosen for its soothing and nourishing qualities, shared with love to uplift those around her.

Her commitment to wellness extends to a powerful herbal remedy, passed down by a Tabib (homeopath) , which she has used for years to maintain her health. Blending ginger, garlic, turmeric, black seeds, olive oil, and honey into a smooth paste, she stores it in a glass jar for a month. Every morning, she takes a tablespoon mixed with lime juice and warm water or tea, a ritual that boosts her immune system and detoxifies her body. This practice, rooted in Afghan tradition, inspires others to embrace self-care and cultural heritage. Her quiet yet profound influence; through mentoring younger women, sharing stories while watching cherished documentaries, and fostering community connections; embodies the initiative’s mission of inclusivity and empowerment. Bibi Noorzia Ghafoory’s story celebrates the diverse strengths of Afghan women, showing how love, perseverance, and cultural pride unite communities and inspire generations.

Alaha Ahrar: The Strength to Rise and Give Voice
Through the Afghan American Mothers and Strong Women Circle Initiative, led by RahimaJaan, we honor Afghan-American women who move forward with patience, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility toward their families and communities. Alaha Ahrar is one such woman, a daughter, a sister, and an Afghan-American who has built her path gradually, with consistent effort and gratitude for those who supported her along the way.
Alaha’s journey reflects the quiet strength that many Afghan women carry. She did not rise overnight. Instead, she advanced through discipline, hard work, and a clear sense of purpose. While pursuing her education, she balanced multiple responsibilities. At the University of Mary Washington, she completed triple majors in Human Rights, Political Science, and International Affairs, along with a certificate in Middle Eastern Studies, all while working twenty hours a week to support herself and maintain her scholarship. This period of her life showed not only her academic ability but also her resilience and sense of duty.

Later, she earned a Master’s degree in Social Justice and Human Rights from George Mason University. Her graduate research focused on the experiences of survivors of human trafficking and human smuggling. Through this work, she deepened her understanding of vulnerability and injustice, and chose to use her knowledge to advocate for those who often go unseen.
Over the years, Alaha has remained committed to service. As the Chief Executive Officer of International Kindness Sharing (IKS), she leads efforts to support communities in need and promote understanding across cultures. She has also contributed her time and experience as a board member of the Afghan Women’s Writing Project and World Poetry Canada International. These roles reflect her belief in the power of education, storytelling, and community support, values that are deeply rooted in Afghan culture.

At Laaluanar Foundation, we have known Alaha since the early days when she was just beginning to establish herself. Over the years, we have witnessed her passion and the quiet sacrifices she has made, especially in serving her parents and supporting her sisters. Her commitment to her family has always been evident, and it has remained a central part of who she is while she continued to grow and contribute beyond her home.
What stands out most about Alaha is not only what she has achieved, but how she has carried herself throughout her journey. As a daughter and sister, she has stayed connected to the values of family, respect, and responsibility. She has moved forward while remaining grateful to those who encouraged and supported her. Her multilingual abilities, fluent in English, Persian, Urdu, and Pashto, have allowed her to bridge different communities and serve as a voice for understanding and inclusion.
Alaha’s decision to step forward as a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia’s 7th District is a continuation of her long-standing commitment to service. For her, running for public office is not about seeking power, but about extending the work she has already been doing; advocating for fairness, supporting families, and working toward stronger, more compassionate communities. It is another step in a journey that has always been guided by her values rather than personal ambition.

Through the Afghan American Mothers and Strong Women Circle Initiative, we recognize women like Alaha because they show us that real strength often comes quietly. It comes from showing up consistently, carrying responsibility with grace, and continuing to grow while staying rooted in one’s identity. Her story reminds us that progress does not always look dramatic. Sometimes, it looks like steady steps taken with purpose and humility.
Alaha Ahrar’s path offers encouragement to many Afghan-American women and young girls. It shows that it is possible to honor your family, your culture, and your values while continuing to pursue growth and contribute to the society around you. Her journey demonstrates that leadership can come from a place of service, and that one does not need to leave their roots behind in order to move forward.
At Laaluanar Foundation, we believe in celebrating women who lead with sincerity, who remember where they come from, and who continue to walk their path with both strength and gratitude. Alaha Ahrar represents this spirit; a woman who has grown step by step, supported by her values and the people around her, and who continues to serve with the same care and commitment that have guided her all along.
May her story inspire other Afghan-American women to trust their own pace, to value the support they receive, and to continue building their lives with purpose and integrity.
