Our Afghan-American families: Resilient contributors gathered in unity, ready to weave their talents into America’s story.
At Laaluanar Foundation, we’ve witnessed the quiet power of integration firsthand. Since 2013, our community-based nonprofit has been a bridge for Afghan-American families; resilient souls who’ve arrived with stories of perseverance and a drive to contribute. Through programs like our Garment Initiative, which turns traditional sewing into collaborative community projects, and storytelling circles that preserve cultural heritage while fostering unity, we’ve seen families transform challenges into contributions. These aren’t just programs; they’re pathways to self-reliance, where participants share skills virtually with loved ones back home and mentor the next generation here in America.
With deepest gratitude, we invite you to support the effective integration of these Afghan-American families in our community; resilient contributors weaving their skills into America’s enduring strength. Our new Tailoring & Textile Training Program is a shining example: Your gift equips women and youth with sewing, design, and entrepreneurship expertise for meaningful employment, innovation, and community leadership.

In action: Women building tailoring skills in the program, blending tradition with innovation for a brighter future.
Picture this: A young Afghan-American woman, once sidelined by resettlement hurdles, now confidently stitching custom designs that blend intricate Afghan patterns with modern American fashion. She launches a small online shop, hires a neighbor as her assistant, and volunteers to teach basic tailoring at a local school; directly enriching our community’s creative economy and inspiring her children to dream big. That’s the ripple effect of integration: Not just survival, but thriving as active, innovative members of our society.
Through this program, we’ll empower over 50 individuals in our inaugural cohort. Hands-on workshops cover everything from basic stitching techniques to business planning, ensuring graduates are ready for jobs in local textile firms, freelance gigs, or their own ventures. We’re proud to partner with Smart Tailor Group, who are generously providing certified instructors, discounted materials, and complimentary training space. Together, we’re transforming potential into productive partnerships that benefit us all; boosting local innovation, diversifying the workforce, and strengthening the vibrant mosaic of our great nation.
Why Your Gift Matters: Every Thread Counts
Every contribution, no matter the size, drives real progress: Fostering self-reliance that enables seamless integration, effective contributions to our great nation, and enrichment of its vibrant mosaic with fresh talents and perspectives. Here’s how your support scales:
- $50: Funds fabric and notions for a beginner’s toolkit—sparking a participant’s first project and building her confidence.
- $250: Covers instructor materials for a full workshop session, reaching 5-10 learners with advanced design tips.

Legacy Honors Blog
Discover timeless stories on the Legacy Honors Blog, a warm place where tales of elders who left us come alive, encouraging us to value and share their strong spirits. The first story celebrates Fatah Ghafori (FatahJaan)’s father:
In Loving Memory of Marhoom Haji Abdul Rizaq Ghafoory (1920–2016)
A man of strong values, quiet power, and kind heart, Marhoom Haji Abdul Rizaq Ghafoory lived a life that helped many people near and far. He was a loving dad, humble person, and always true to what he believed. His marriage to a woman from Badakhshan, the city of radiant rubies, while he hailed from Qandahar, the land of nourishing pomegranates, made the Laaluanar family possible. This union was more than a bond between two regions; it was a medal of honor, symbolizing the family’s survival through wars and conflicts without being divided by ethnic, regional, or other differences. The family embraced an understanding to live without judgment, turning diversity into their greatest strength; like many families who see difference as a precious gift.

He loved Erfan (spiritual wisdom) and treated every guest with great respect, walking them to the door no matter their age; a sign of his warm welcome. He served the Afghan government in various official capacities for decades, always with dedication and respect, retiring before migrating to the USA. He penned heartfelt letters to family and friends, often initiated by their inquiries or his fond recollections of individuals who had shown kindness to him and the community. In these letters, he passionately championed unity, compassion, and mutual support, offering a comforting hand to those in need and encouraging others to reconnect with unsung heroes, ensuring their contributions endured despite the fractured ties caused by migrations. The wider community sought his wisdom as one of the rare elders enduring pre-migration eras. Drawing from rich memories and experiences, he detailed family stories, offered gentle guidance, and provided solutions through these letters, clarifying complexities for those whose parents passed without witnesses. His generation was a true blessing, inspiring healing, strength, and unbreakable bonds in our scattered communities; embrace their light and unite forward!
Raised as an orphan, he always cared for those without family. His help for orphans came from the heart. He made a personal library with special books, notes, and thoughts, hoping his family would read and follow the lessons, not publish them. He never gave up, like a true fighter. He enjoyed traditions, like making Afghan Pink Cream Tea (Qaimaq Chai) for family times, bringing relatives together in happiness. Marhoom Haji Abdul Rizaq Ghafoory’s life showed dignity, help, and love. His enduring legacy stands as a beacon of unity and compassion, inspiring generations to embrace diversity and build a harmonious world.

Success Story of the Garment Production Program
At the Laaluanar Foundation, a Texas-based nonprofit established in 2013, our volunteer-driven team connects communities to ignite empowerment and cultural preservation. The Laaluanar Partnership Bridges Blog launches with a celebration of our Garment Production Program, a powerful testament to collaborations with SVEA Foundation and Smart Tailor Group, empowering Afghan communities in Qandahar and the Afghan diaspora in the United States, who are passionate about their heritage and committed to thriving as model citizens in their new homes.
From 2021 to 2022, the Garment Production Program transformed lives in Qandahar by providing training in garment production, fostering self-sufficiency, and preserving Afghan cultural heritage. SVEA Foundation, a Sweden-based leader, shared vital resources—sewing machines, vibrant fabrics, tools, and solar-powered equipment—enabling Afghan communities to build skills and strengthen bonds, with support from local coordinators. Laaluanar connected partners to inspire participation, hosted bi-weekly training in safe, equipped centers, and facilitated resource delivery with cultural sensitivity. Plans to expand to Badakhshan were paused due to challenges in mobilizing communities under difficult regional conditions, leading to a temporary suspension until circumstances allow reinstatement. We remain hopeful for its revival.

In the United States, Smart Tailor Group, a Richardson, Texas-based collective of artisans, continues this legacy through virtual apprenticeship training for the Afghan diaspora in Dallas and McKinney. Their skilled designers and tailors guide participants in blending Afghan designs with global market trends, crafting high-quality garments for online and retail markets to spark economic opportunities and integration. Laaluanar connects these efforts through virtual platforms and community engagement, fostering model citizenship.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to SVEA Foundation, whose dedication to equality and innovative education, showcased at sveaeducation.se, inspires us. Their resources laid a foundation for hope in Qandahar, fueling our shared mission of empowerment.
We are equally inspired by Smart Tailor Group, whose commitment to exceptional craftsmanship, seen at smarttailorgroup.com, transforms cultural visions into reality. Their expertise in alterations and dressmaking empowers the Afghan diaspora to shine as confident artisans, aligning with our vision of cultural pride and prosperity.
This success story reflects Laaluanar’s volunteer-driven commitment to connect and collaborate, as outlined in our Initiative(Laaluanar Partnership Bridges Initiative). Our priorities lie in serving our new homes in the United States, fostering unity and pride, while staying dedicated to vulnerable Afghan communities back home, sharing our passion for Afghanistan with the help of friends of Afghanistan. Featured Story: A Star Kid’s Birthday Gift of Stories
Meet 10-year-old Mahdi from the United States, a kind and creative Star Kid chosen by KarimaJaan for his empathy and desire to help others. Mahdi’s room is full of fun things that spark his imagination; stacks of Big Nate books, Lego bricks for building cool worlds, Minecraft crafts on his corkboard, and a mini Pac-Man arcade machine he loves to play. His cat, Saya, curls up with him while he reads or solves Rubik’s cubes, sketches bright pumpkins and flowers, or turns empty cornflake and chocolate boxes into gifts for his school friends. Mahdi enjoys playing with toys on the floor, riding his bike, and swimming to stay active.

Mahdi feels a special bond with his Afghan roots, thanks to family stories about a trip to Qandahar he doesn’t remember but hears from his brother, and watching documentaries with his grandmother about Afghanistan. He loves pomegranates, which remind him of Qandahar’s harvests, and imagines the mountains of Badakhshan. He’s inspired by Afghan kids who stay strong and kind, even with little, showing him how creativity and care matter; values he lives out every day with his friends.
For his birthday, Mahdi shared a simple but meaningful gift: he recorded himself reading Afghan folktales about adventure and family, adding a short message to encourage kids to keep dreaming. He also drew a picture of a mountain inspired by lapis lazuli, a stone from Badakhshan, to show strength and creativity. With help from the BirthdayStar Bridge’s trusted friends in Qandahar, his story and drawing brought a smile to orphans there, supporting their happiness alongside basics like school. Mahdi says, “Reading my stories and sharing my drawing made me feel closer to kids in Qandahar. It’s nice to help them feel hopeful too.”
Mahdi’s story shows how Star Kids can make a real difference for their peers in Afghanistan, building connection. Inspired? Learn how to create your own birthday gesture below or contact KarimaJaan via the Laaluanar Foundation.

KarimaJaan, my beloved sister and a fellow founder of the Laaluanar Foundation, has always been the heart of our family kitchen, renowned for her nurturing cooking that delights not only her own children but also those of relatives and friends from diverse backgrounds. Affectionately called Ama KarimaJaan or Khala KarimaJaan, she creates favorite dishes with love, often sending them by mail, entrusting them to family or community members who are traveling, or preparing them during visits across states to fulfill the eager wish lists of young ones. Drawing skills from her amazing networks and friends; spanning various cultures and age groups; she applies them generously, blending traditional Afghan techniques with innovative twists learned through these connections. This approach not only beautifies family tables but also fosters unity, as her cooking brings together elders sharing stories of heritage, youth exploring new flavors, and diverse friends building empathy through shared meals. Her warmth inspired me to invite her to contribute one of her signature recipes: Bolani, a versatile Afghan stuffed flatbread that’s perfect for all ages; nutritious, handheld, and endlessly adaptable with fillings like potatoes or chives. As a dedicated humanitarian with decades in the airline industry, KarimaJaan blends her travels between homes with her passion for cooking, making a difference by teaching the next generation about heritage while connecting extended family and friends through food that bridges cultural divides and promotes harmonious gatherings.

Ingredients (for Chive Filling Bolani):
- For the Dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (white flour for younger generations; whole wheat or dark flour for seniors with health considerations)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup water (adjust as needed)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons instant yeast (such as Fleischmann’s Bread Machine Yeast, for a lighter, fluffier dough)
- For the Filling:
- 4-5 cups finely chopped fresh chives (leeks as a substitute only if chives are unavailable)
- 1 teaspoon ground red chili (mostly preferred; black pepper as alternative)
- Salt to taste
- Optional: Chopped fresh cilantro or spinach for added nutrition
- For Frying: Vegetable oil (use sparingly for a less oily result)
- For Serving: Sour milk or yogurt dip
Instructions:
- Prepare the dough: Mix flour, salt, yeast, and oil in a bowl, gradually adding water to form a soft dough. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth, cover, and let rest for 30 minutes.
- Make the filling: Mix chopped chives with salt, red chili, and any optional herbs until well combined; let sit for 10 minutes to release moisture, then squeeze out excess liquid.
- Assemble: Divide dough into 8-10 balls. Roll each into a thin circle (thinner for potato variations preferred by younger generations; thicker for chive filling), place 2-3 tablespoons of filling on one half, fold over, and seal edges.
- Fry: Heat a small amount of oil in a pan over mild (low-medium) fire. Fry each Bolani for 2-3 minutes per side until golden and crispy, avoiding excess oil for a lighter result.
- Serve: Cut into wedges and enjoy with sour milk or yogurt dip; KarimaJaan notes it’s mostly prepared for lunch, where younger generations prefer it as a main or pre-dish (eating 2-3 pieces), while it appeals even to folks from other nationalities. Variations by province exist, but the Qandahari style, as shown, is her favorite for its simplicity and flavor.
