Gathering 1: Inaugural Night – “Roots of Resilience” (November 11, 2016)
Event Report: The inaugural Shared Stories & Memories Night gathering, held on Friday evening at the Aram Art Hall in Dallas. The event began with a warm welcome from host Abdul Ghafoor Ghafoory (GhafoorJaan). With hearts full of hope and a shared passion for preserving our vibrant heritage, the evening unfolded as a beautiful reminder of the bonds that unite us across distances and generations, inviting everyone to embrace the joy of connection and the power of storytelling. Rahima Ghafoory (RahimaJaan) delivered the foundation’s message, announcing its unwavering support and commitment to providing essential resources for cultural initiatives, while introducing its non-political nature and focus on shared cultural and literary commonalities rather than differences. Speakers including BenezirJaan Zaman, NaheedJaan Walizadeh, Nesim Shakib, WahidaJaan Yaqubi, Naeem Hakimi, Dr. Kazemi, Najia Jan Laali, Zia Masumi, AbedaJaan Shirazian, and others shared poetry recitations, introductions to cultural figures and provinces, and personal reflections. The evening highlighted Afghan and Persian literary heritage, with recitations from poets like Dr. Sami Hamed, Rumi, Hafez Shirazi, Shakiba Shamim, Leila Kasra, and Nima Yushij. It concluded with tea and sweets, fostering friendly conversations. Special thanks were extended to FereshtaJaan Sarhadi for recording, MehdiJaan Laali for photography, and the Aram Art team. The gathering also announced plans for a cultural publication, inviting collaborations from writers, poets, and journalists.
